The Objective of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change [UNFCCC] is stabilization of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere at a value that is safe and stable. The Carbon Budget Analysis Tool CBAT is primarily focused on measuring the path to that UNFCCC 'concentration-objective'.

As atmospheric concentrations of CO2 are most often measured as 'Parts Per Million by Volume' [PPMV], it is difficult to relate these directly to the 'carbon-weight' of the 'carbon-emissions' affecting their rise.

However, converting PPMV to a weight of carbon is straightforward. The conversion factor from PPMV to a weight of carbon is 1 PPMV CO2 weighs 2.13 Billion Tonnes Carbon or 'Gigatonnes' of Carbon [Gt C].

In CBAT concentrations are shown as Gt C on the upper left vertical axis & as PPMV on the upper right axis [as in the image above].

Doing this conversion makes it easier to generally measure and compare the Green House Gas [GHG] 'Contraction & Concentration' output from 'climate-models'.
